Treating varicose veins

Treating varicose veins

Varicose veins are a serious health problem which is not only painful, but also aesthetically unpleasant. Varicose veins on legs need special treatment and care.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are chronically enlarged and twisted veins. Varicose veins should not be disregarded: consult your doctor to get an official and correct diagnosis and therapy, and regularly pay attention to skin-care on the problematic spots.

What are the causes of varicose veins?

Varicose veins can be traced back to genetics, prolonged standing, and straining of legs. The process can start as the weakening and widening of vein walls, and deficiency in venous valve functioning. Blood stagnates and can not flow toward the heart. Toxins in between cells accumulate, resulting in inflammation. Women are more affected than men.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

  • At an early stage one might feel they have heavy legs and that smarting legs need immediate rest after coming home.
  • Ankle swelling even after little straining
  • Stabbing, tingling sensations in legs.
  • Muscle cramps and skin discoloration may develop.
  • Later on, small and bigger purple swelling may appear on the calves.
  • Enlarged veins cause legs to hurt and smart even while doing small daily tasks.

How can we prevent varicose veins?

You can maintain healthy veins by having an active lifestyle and exercising regularly. Obesity can also be a risk factor so it is recommended to keep a healthy weight and quit smoking in order to prevent varicose veins. It is best to avoid food rich in salt and sodium (e.g. processed food, potato, pistachio, tuna), but eating citrus fruits, broccoli, pepper, spinach, grapes and cherry can be preventive. Every once in a while a light massage and wearing compression socks are recommended for improving circulation.

Additional risk factors

Those who are disposed to varicose veins or have diabetes or other kind of metabolic disorder should consider consulting a doctor for prevention. Pregnancy is also a risk factor, so pregnant women should be conscious about varicose veins as well. If varicose veins already appeared it is best to avoid warm baths, sauna, sunbathing and straining legs.
